چکیده

Abstract We study the transition pathways of a Lennard-Jones cluster of seven particles in three dimensions. Low lying saddle points of the LJ cluster, which can be reached directly from a minimum without passing through another minimum, are identified without any presumption of their characteristics, nor of the product states they lead to. The probabilities are computed for paths going from a given minimum to the surrounding saddle points. These probabilities are directly related to prefactors in the rate formula. This determination of the rate prefactors includes all anharmonicities, near or far from saddle points, which are pertinent in the very sophisticated energy landscape of LJ clusters and in many other complex systems.

Transition rate prefactors for systems of many degrees of freedom.

When a minimum on the potential energy surface is surrounded by multiple saddle points with similar energy barriers, the transition pathways with greater prefactors are more important than those that have similar energy barriers but smaller prefactors. In this paper, we present a theoretical formulation for the prefactors, computing the probabilities for transition paths from a minimum to its s...

Lennard-Jones Energy Parameter for Pure Fluids from Scaled Particle Theory

By considering the fact that the surface tension of a real fluid arises from a combination of both repulsive and attractive forces between molecules, a new expression for the interfacial tension has been derived from scaled particle theory (SPT)  based on the work of cavity formation and the interaction energy between molecules. At the critical temperature, the interfacial tension between c...

Transition path sampling with a one point boundary scheme

Abstract Studying the motion of Lennard-Jones clusters in an external potential having a very narrow channel passage at the saddle point, we present a one point boundary scheme to numerically sample transition (reaction) paths. This scheme does not require knowledge of the transition states (saddle points) or that of the final states. A transition path within a given time interval (0, tf ) cons...

The Modified Lennard-Jones and Devonshire Equation of State

Lennard-Jones-Devonshire equation of state is an old but theoretical based EOS. The concept of the nearest neighboring molecules or coordination number is proposed to be a function of temperature and volume, whereas it is a constant in the original. The dilute gas and hard sphere limits of molecules are employed to determine this function. Improvement of this modification is demonstrated by pro...

NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF THE PHASE TRANSITIONS IN CLUSTERS

We have studied the phase transitions in atomic clusters by molecular dynamics simulation, assuming Lennard-Jones interatomic pair potential. Calculations are performed by DAP parallel computer. The results are analyzed by simulating their orientational distribution plots (dot-plot), and neutron diffraction patterns. It is shown that all the main features of the bulk phase transitions are e...
